Wing Heads.

Dr Asrar Elahi is a founding member of Pakistan Association of Otago Inc. and head of Art & Culture Wing-PAO. His responsibilities encompass shaping the association’s vision and crafting its strategic direction. Additionally, as head of the Art & Culture Committee within PAO, he takes charge of orchestrating various art-related initiatives and fostering the promotion of art and culture within the community.

 

Over the past years, the Art & Culture Wing-PAO, under his leadership has achieved several milestones, including the successful conduct of the 1st PAO Art Exhibition themed “Colours of Pakistan”. In addition to this, he orchestrated the first-ever Islamic Art & Calligraphy exhibition and the 1st Islamic Art Workshop, conducted in collaboration with MW Calligraphy Art from Auckland. Asrar’s vision and strategic restructuring not only transformed the Art & Culture Wing but elevated it to the status of a division, with the inclusion of multiple heads representing diverse artistic disciplines. Notably, he secured funding from local association to support these exhibitions and workshops. As an instructor, he effectively guided the first batch of five-week Beginners Painting Classes. Moreover, Dr Asrar is also an active member of the Otago Art Society, where he exhibits his paintings.

 

His commitment to effective governance is underscored by his belief that strong leadership is a cornerstone for the growth of any organization or nation. To enhance his governance skills, Asrar participated in a Community Governance Workshop and completed a 6-months Community Governance Mentorship Program organised by Mentoring NZ and South Volunteers in collaboration with Community Governance NZ under the mentorship of Malcolm Wong.

 

Professionally, Dr Asrar recently completed his PhD in Dentistry from University of Otago. Beyond his academic achievements, he harbours an interest in entrepreneurship. Recently he started his own DCC approved ethnic food business called ‘Basboosa Bites’. Presently, he is engaged in the development of his own art and Photography business and a Medtech venture rooted in the insights derived from his PhD, after consulting with Startup Dunedin.

Ms. Sidra Iqbal (Head Community Engagement)

Ms. Sidra Iqbal is a founding member of the Pakistan Association of Otago and currently serves as the Head of the Community Engagement Wing. Since the Association’s inception, Sidra has been a driving force behind its growth, consistently demonstrating exceptional leadership, creativity, and commitment to community building.

Over the years, she has played a central role in organizing and hosting a wide range of successful events—from cultural festivals and family fun days to formal gatherings and public celebrations. Her ability to connect with people, coordinate teams, and bring energy to every occasion has helped create memorable experiences that strengthen unity and pride within the Pakistani community in Otago.

Professionally, Sidra holds a master’s degree in economics and has gained valuable experience in academic, strategic, and community-focused roles. Her skills in planning, public speaking, and stakeholder engagement contribute meaningfully to her work within the Association.

As Head of the Community Engagement Wing, Sidra leads with a vision of inclusivity, diversity, and connection. She is passionate about creating welcoming spaces where everyone feels valued, involved, and proud of their heritage. Her goal is to foster meaningful relationships within the community, promote cultural understanding, and ensure that PAO continues to grow as a vibrant and unified platform for all generations.



Dr. Zohaib Rana Amjad Ali is a dedicated and passionate sports and wellbeing lead for the Pakistan Association of Otago. With a deep commitment to promoting physical activity, mental health, and community engagement, Dr. Rana has established himselves as a respected voice in the community.

As a graduate of University of Otago with a PhD in molecular biology, Dr. Rana has always been interested in the intersection between physical activity and health. After joining the Pakistan Association of Otago as a sports and wellbeing officer, Dr. Rana has been instrumental in organizing a variety of events and initiatives aimed at promoting physical activity and mental health.

In addition to organizing sports tournaments, fitness classes, and health and wellness workshops, Dr. Rana has also been dedicated to community outreach, fostering strong relationships with other community organizations and engaging with members of the community to better understand their needs.

Community Objectives:

  • To promote physical activity and mental health within the Pakistani community of Otago through the organization of sports tournaments, fitness classes, and health and wellness workshops.
  • To foster strong relationships with other community organizations in Otago in order to better serve the needs of the Pakistani community.
  • To engage with members of the community in order to better understand their needs and develop initiatives that reflect their interests and concerns.
  • To provide opportunities for community members to come together, build relationships, and celebrate their culture and heritage.

Through Dr. Rana’s tireless efforts, the Pakistan Association of Otago has become a vibrant and engaged community, dedicated to promoting physical activity, mental health, and community engagement. Their work serves as an inspiration to others in the community, and demonstrates the power of collaboration and commitment in achieving meaningful change.

Anam Nawaz is a committed educator, community leader, and champion for cultural and professional growth. As the current President of the Pakistan Association of Otago and Head of its Business Wing, Anam brings a unique blend of educational expertise, strategic thinking, and deep community engagement to everything she does.

With over seven years of experience in tertiary education, Anam holds a degree in English Language and is currently completing her PhD in Applied Linguistics. Her academic background is complemented by her role as an ESL and academic writing teacher at the University of Otago, where she supports students from diverse backgrounds in reaching their full potential. Anam’s passion for learning and teaching continues to shape her leadership style—empathetic, collaborative, and future-focused.

As the Head of the Business Wing of PAO, Anam is especially driven to create opportunities for Pakistani professionals, entrepreneurs, and aspiring business leaders in Otago. She envisions the Business Wing as a platform where talent is nurtured, ideas are shared, and community members are supported to thrive economically and socially. From connecting small business owners to local resources, to hosting professional development events and mentoring youth, she believes in empowering people to step forward with confidence.

Under her leadership, the association is expanding its role beyond cultural celebration to become a hub for growth, inclusion, and innovation. She is passionate about helping newcomers settle into life in New Zealand, encouraging women to take on leadership roles, and ensuring that the voices of the Pakistani community are heard and valued across Otago.

Outside of her professional and community roles, Anam is a devoted mother and homemaker. She brings the same care and energy to her family life that she brings to her work—believing strongly in balance, kindness, and the strength of shared purpose.

Anam continues to lead with integrity, vision, and a genuine commitment to seeing her community flourish—educationally, culturally, and economically.

With a background in Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) from Pakistan and international volunteer experience in Singapore, I am dedicated to supporting the health, education, and overall well-being of women and children. Currently, I work closely with preschool programs and also conduct Islamic studies classes for children, nurturing their moral and spiritual development alongside early learning. My work blends healthcare knowledge, community engagement, and faith-based education to create a positive impact in young lives.
